ABOUT ERICK J. NEGRÓN-ÁLVAREZ

I’m Erick Joel Negrón Álvarez, an environmental biologist transitioning into engineering from the coastal town of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Growing up immersed in marine and coastal ecosystems shaped my understanding of how tightly human systems are coupled to environmental health. I am currently a Ph.D. student at Purdue University, jointly enrolled in Sustainability & Environmental Engineering (SEE) and the Ecological Sciences & Engineering (ESE) graduate program. I conduct my doctoral research in The Proctor Lab, housed within the Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) Department, where my work centers on environmental microbiology, drinking water systems, and infrastructure resilience. My research focuses on microbial ecology in engineered water systems, with particular emphasis on drinking-water microbiomes, biofilm dynamics, stagnation, and public-health–relevant opportunistic pathogens. I am especially interested in how environmental stressors, system design, and operational decisions shape microbial risk, and how sensor-driven or engineering-informed interventions can be used to improve water quality and system resilience. Methodologically, my work integrates microbiology, environmental engineering, and systems thinking.Beyond the lab, I am actively involved in Purdue’s applied microbiome ecosystem. I currently serve as Vice President of the Student Association of Applied Microbiome Sciences (SAAMS) and help lead efforts to strengthen student-led microbiome initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, agriculture, and the life sciences. Before starting my Ph.D, I worked as a Biologist and Environmental Consultant in Puerto Rico, supporting federally funded and private-sector projects in environmental permitting, compliance, and impact assessment. That professional experience continues to shape how I approach research, with a strong emphasis on applicability, regulatory relevance, and real-world constraints. At the core of my work is a commitment to science that serves communities. I am motivated by research that not only advances fundamental understanding, but also informs policy, protects public health, and supports environmental justice—particularly in vulnerable and historically overburdened regions. Let’s connectIf you’re working in environmental engineering, microbiology, water systems, policy, or interdisciplinary research, I’m always open to thoughtful conversations and collaboration. e•••••••@purdue.edu | e••••••••@gmail.com
