I’m not creative.”That’s the story I carried out of primary school.Whether it was said outright or simply absorbed, it stayed with me — the quiet belief that creativity belonged to other people. The expressive ones. The artists. The naturally gifted.I became capable instead. Responsible. High-achieving.But not creative.It took years to unpick that story. To realise creativity isn’t something you’re awarded — it’s something you already are. It’s how you see. How you connect. How you imagine something different and move toward it.Reclaiming that changed everything.Now, as a writer coach and founder of Coffee With Ella, I support women of colour writers to recognise what’s already within them — the voice, the instinct, the depth — and build creative lives rooted in confidence, possibility and intention.Not by forcing output.Not by performing.But by returning to themselves.So many writers I work with carry similar stories.The belief that they’re not creative enough.Not visible enough.Not the “right” kind of writer.That story isn’t just personal. It’s cultural.
