ABOUT ELIZABETH R. ORTIZ
I’m an educator, storyteller, and advocate who seeks to build learning spaces where people can see themselves, trust their voice, and shape their future. For over 20 years, I’ve worked in classrooms, boardrooms, and communities to help people challenge the messages that shape our identities, claim their stories, and grow with purpose. Whether I’m guiding students through media analysis, working with a nonprofit board, or co-creating community events like Media Literacy Week or the LV Women’s Summit, my mission stays the same: move people from passive consumers to empowered creators. My academic and public work explores how young people - particularly from historically marginalized communities - experience, resist, and reshape dominant narratives through storytelling, representation, and critical engagement with media. My scholarship and practice are deeply informed by the belief that education can be a tool for voice, joy, and justice when it reflects the truths of those it serves.I’ve built college programs, led DEI initiatives, and served on boards focused on economic empowerment, the arts, and education. I’m also a business owner of a local restaurant that connects culture, food, and community. My research has always centered voice and representation because I believe the stories we consume shape the lives we imagine. And I want better stories, for all of us.
