ABOUT ELENA MATTEI

I am a multimodal linguist and applied researcher specialising in the analysis and design of tourism and political communication. My work integrates Systemic Functional Linguistics, social semiotics, corpus methods, and computational techniques to produce evidence‑based, communicative models that promote social and ecological wellbeing in destinations and unveil extremist, populist language in political speeches. My research translates rigorous scholarship into usable taxonomies, curated datasets, annotation software, and training for academics and marketing teams. As a former collaborator of ENIT and the Ministry of Tourism, and as a Genoma and Randstad communications consultant, I combine academic research with practical tools to support institutions and businesses in communicating responsibly and effectively.Specializations & experienceResearch-led strategy: I develop corpora (NLP databases), annotation schemas, software and AI‑assisted workflows to map persuasive practices across Instagram, websites, and archival tourism texts (see my recent Routledge volume on Instagram persuasion through images and text). Each statistical analysis is followed by in-depth qualitative investigation informing responsible, counter‑consumerist narratives.Teaching and skill development: I am Adjunct Professor of multimodal linguistics, Business English, and AI‑assisted writing, mentoring university students to apply digital methods to real‑world communication challenges.Consultancy: I advise SMEs and organizations on multisemiotic brand strategy, SEO, and evidence‑based content design, turning academic insights into measurable marketing outcomes.Mission and valuesMy mission is to reframe persuasive communication so it supports regenerative outcomes: ecological integrity, cultural authenticity, and community wellbeing. I aim to make multimodal literacy accessible so communicators can craft narratives that encourage civic values, responsible travel, resist commodification, and amplify local voices.I prioritize transparency, interdisciplinarity, and practical impact, striving to bring methodological rigor and creative pragmatism into my work.I would be thrilled to get in touch with anyone working on multimodality, semiotics, ecolinguistics, tourism, politics. I see partnerships with tourism boards, SMEs, and NGOs as valuable and extremely enriching.LANGUAGESItalian (C2), English (C2), German (C2), Spanish (B2), Russian (B2).If you want to know more about my writing, the events I have organized or the speeches I gave, please drop me a line!
