ABOUT ELAINE L. BEARER

Bearer is an inter-disciplinarian who has sustained a dual career in brain science and musical composition throughout her life. With 25+ years of sustained NIH funding for brain science, over 100 original scientific publications as well as chapters and two books, and significant experience as an innovator in leadership, mentoring and medical education, Bearer also composes serious music and has held concurrent appointments in Music and Medicine throughout her career. Studies in musical composition began with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and continued at The Manhattan School and New York University. Recordings are available through Albany Records, Amazon and on SoundCloud, YouTube and the UNM faculty website. The Music and Mind lecture series are also posted on YouTube. She initiated and led annual Child Well Being Symposia at University of New Mexico from 2017 until the pandemic to raise consciousness and increase funding for adverse childhood experiences, a major health hazard in New Mexico. Bearer combines molecular-structural-functional studies of the brain through a wide range of techniques with a deep understanding of musical imagination.
