ABOUT DON BAER

Don Baer is a Laboratory Fellow emeritus at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He joined PNNL as a postdoc in 1976 and has served a variety of roles including, Deputy Directory of a Nanotechnology Initiative (20••••05) and Co-Director of the University of Washington and PNNL Joint Center for Nanotechnology (20••••05). During 19••••85 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Surrey, Guildford UK working with Jim Castle. His has been an affiliate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Washington since 2004 and was an adjunct Professor of Physics for Washington State University (19••••12). Most of his research has explored the impact of surfaces and interfaces on material properties including understanding the behaviors of nanoparticles in aqueous and biological systems, the surface chemistry and dissolution of oxides and minerals, and the role of interfacial chemistry on stress corrosion cracking leading to more than 260 peer reviewed publications. He has specialized in adapting surface sensitive tools to address complex problems and to provide quantitative information. He has received several awards including the 2009 Albert Nerken Award from the American Vacuum Society (AVS), the 2011 John Rivière Prize of the UK Surface Analysis Forum, the 2012 Microscopy Today Innovation Award and an Award of Merit from ASTM International (2014). He has strong interest in scientific education and received the PNNL Fitzner Eberhardt Award for outstanding contributions to science education and the Chester Cooper Mentor of the Year Award for mentoring technical staff (2003). He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, ASTM International and the AVS and a Member of the Washington State Academy of Science.
