ABOUT DHEERAJ LALWANI

I am an MD Candidate at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, driven by a passion for advancing equitable, patient-centered healthcare. Through clinical training, research, leadership, and advocacy, I strive to bridge gaps in healthcare access, foster inclusivity in medical spaces, and contribute to meaningful advancements in medicine.At FIU HWCOM, I have had the opportunity to explore diverse facets of medicine, from evidence-based clinical practice and hands-on patient care to interdisciplinary collaboration and community service. My experiences have strengthened my commitment to addressing health disparities, particularly those affecting marginalized communities, including patients of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. I actively engage in mentorship and student leadership, serving as:* President of MedGSA (Medical Students for Gender & Sexuality Advancement) – Advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion in medical education and healthcare* President of the Neuroscience Interest Group (NSIG) – Providing medical students with exposure to neurology, research, and career development opportunities* FIU Rotaract President – Leading community service initiatives that integrate healthcare and global outreachMy research background includes clinical work in neurocritical care and emergency neurology at Yale School of Medicine, where I investigated the feasibility of low-field portable MRI for detecting neurological pathologies and explored social determinants of health in stroke care. I have presented at national conferences, including the American Academy of Neurology and the International Stroke Conference, and contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications.As I continue my medical education, I remain committed to lifelong learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and championing health equity—ensuring that all patients receive the compassionate, evidence-based care they deserve.Let’s connect!
