WORK HISTORY
Interim Head of Wlvarchitecture, School of Architecture and Built Environment @University of Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton, GB
As Acting Head then Interim Head of WLVArchitecture I provided strategic and operational leadership for the department, representing the school at faculty and university level. I led a dynamic, proactive and collaborative team through various successful professional body validations and accreditations, including CIAT, RIBA and ARB. During my tenure the department introduced a new recruitment and outreach strategy that delivered year-on-year growth in applications and helped close the ethnicity attainment gap through a more inclusive, decolonised curriculum. Over this period our architecture subject area rose in various league table, underpinned by high NSS scores, culminating in the Architecture subject (department) ranking in the Top 10 in the UK in 6 of the 7 NSS2025 Themes, and the BSc (Hons) Architectural Design Technology Course achieving 100% for Teaching on My Course in the NSS2025.

ABOUT DAVID HEESOM FCIAT
I’m a Professor of Digital Built Environment and Interim Head of WLVArchitecture at the University of Wolverhampton, working where BIM, digital twins, AI and immersive technologies (VR/AR) meet real projects in the built environment. I’m also a (Fellow) Chartered Architectural Technologist (FCIAT), so my work sits firmly at the intersection of design, technology and practice.Since obtaining my PhD over two decades ago, I’ve led research and knowledge-exchange projects on BIM implementation, 4D/5D simulation, offsite and modular construction, heritage BIM, Digital Twins, drones and UAS and AI-enabled decision support. This includes directing industry-facing research centres and securing multiple Innovate UK and ESIF/ERDF awards, most recently recognised through wining a Knowledge Exchange award for my body of work focusing on ‘Advancing Construction Innovation Through Applied Research and Industry Partnerships’. A lot of my time is spent turning buzzwords into workflows. I work closely with SMEs and larger organisations on BIM implementation, digital twin strategy, scan-to-BIM, 4D planning and AR/VR for training and asset management, often through KTPs and other collaborative programmes that leave partners with tools, skills and measurable impact, not just an academic report.Within WLVArchitecture I’ve helped lead curriculum development, professional accreditations and new approaches to inclusive, digitally enabled architectural education, alongside supervision of a broad portfolio of PhD projects in BIM, digital construction, offsite, heritage and resilience. Externally, I’m an active keynote and invited speaker on themes such as BIM, AI in construction, digitalisation, and Heritage BIM, and I regularly contribute to professional CPD - for example on 3D scanning, HBIM and the evolving role of AI for traditional and historic buildings. I also serve as a Guest Editor and reviewer for several high impact international journals in the field. If you’re interested in collaborating on research, exploring a KTP or Innovate UK bids, developing digital strategies for your organisation, or discussing PhD and doctoral supervision in digital construction and the built environment, I’m always happy to connect and start a conversation.#DigitalConstruction #BIM #DigitalTwins #AIinConstruction #BuiltEnvironment #DigitalBuiltEnvironment #ConstructionInnovation #ArchitecturalTechnology #OffsiteConstruction #HeritageBIM #4DBIM #VRinConstruction #ARinConstruction #ImmersiveTech #ScanToBIM
