ABOUT DANIEL CONTRERAS
As a Fourth-Year student at Lake Forest, I have found my histories driving my academic interests as I deepen my understanding in the fields of Psychology, Religion, and Gender, Sexuality, & Women\'s Studies. Identifying myself as a First-Generation student born to immigrants in the United States has developed persistence, diligence, and a yearn for knowledge. I understand the psychological and social impacts one may experience when pursuing citizenship and how support systems are found in mental health practices as well as religious/spiritual communities. Community, the building of and maintenance of it, is at the center of my work. This vital aspect of my life has introduced opportunities for knowledge and experience that display the power and support a community holds. This idea is reinforced through my annual participation as a First Connection mentor where I welcome students to campus and establish a sense of belonging through our diverse identities. With engaging in these communities, I am afforded insights into daily life, experiences (triumphs, struggles, and tensions), and the makeup of the many beautiful people found within an identity. Acknowledging the systems that (dis)advantage certain identities in society, I empower my community through active work and voicing the thoughts, ideas, and emotions that are often not centered or included in dialogue. This commitment has afforded me opportunities to serve as a student representative on the the Religion Dept. Student Academic Advisory Committee.
