ABOUT DAN STRAND
I am a strategic, values-driven health and safety leader with over 20 years of experience across regulatory, aviation, healthcare, and large-scale operational environments.I am currently Director of Workplace Health & Safety for Canada Customer Fulfillment at Amazon, focused on advancing employee health, safety, and psychological well-being across complex, fast-paced operations nationwide. Throughout my career, I have been committed to helping organizations protect workers and strengthen cultures of safety, well-being, and psychological health across British Columbia and Canada.Most recently, I served as Executive Director, Health Safety Well-being and Ability Management at Island Health, where I led system-wide initiatives across occupational and psychological health and safety, wellness, and ability management within a complex healthcare system. I advanced safety management systems, reinforced leadership accountability, partnered closely with unions and clinical leaders, and helped embed a culture of care that recognizes staff safety and well-being as foundational to patient care.Previously, at WorkSafeBC, I directed prevention services across all industries in the province, ensuring compliance with the Workers’ Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. I led a multidisciplinary team of more than 380 prevention officers, managers, and technical specialists, with a strong focus on risk-based prevention, leadership development, and fair regulatory oversight.Earlier in my career at the Vancouver Airport Authority, I was responsible for building and sustaining a world-class health and safety management system, including construction safety, security, and hazardous building materials management. I also oversaw corporate Disability Management and Return to Work and an award-winning employee wellness program. During this time, YVR achieved COR certification and received multiple awards, including Canada’s Safest Employer and Best Health and Safety Culture.I hold a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta, a Master’s degree in Occupational and Environmental Health from the University of British Columbia, and executive education from Harvard Kennedy School and UBC Sauder School of Business. I am a CRSP, CIH, and ROH.I am known for my collaborative approach and ability to work with senior leaders, frontline teams, unions, government, and industry partners to deliver practical, risk-based solutions that reduce harm, build trust, and improve safety outcomes.
