It provides older South Australians with access to safe, secure, and affordable rental accommodation. From humble beginnings in 1872, The Cottage Homes now offers more than 130 women and men living on the pension access to housing – enabling them to live independently in a community setting.

ABOUT DAMIAN MADIGAN
A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a Member of the South Australian State Government’s Design Review Panel, I am an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of South Australia. I hold a PhD in Architecture from Monash University, in which I developed my focus on low-rise infill housing.Creator of the term \'bluefield housing\'(to describe the established suburbs) and the associated bluefield co-located housing model, my book \'Bluefield Housing as Alternative Infill for the Suburbs\' is available from Routledge.com in hardback, paperback, and as a free Open Access eBook. In May 2025, ‘Co-located Housing’ was entered into South Australia’s Planning & Design Code as a new Land Use Definition and permitted form of suburban infill. This allows the prevailing patterns of low-rise residential alterations and additions to be used to create multiple dwellings on a lot instead of only making single houses bigger.As a housing researcher, I work collaboratively with academics, industry and government to create new housing typologies across infill, density, diversity, ageing in place, heritage and character. Undertaking research-through-design, as an individual and collaborator my housing propositions have won design competition awards, shortlistings, and commendations from the City of Los Angeles, NSW State Government, the City of Sydney, Architecture Australia, and the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation.You can download my housing research at bluefieldhousing.com.au.Outside of this work, I am Deputy Chair and Non-Executive Director of The Cottage Homes Incorporated, and an Expert Member of the AACA National Accreditation Standing Panel for the accreditation of Architecture Programs across Australia and New Zealand.
