ABOUT CORDELRO MEDLEY

Currently, I share the experience as a case manager, correctional counselor, guest service representative, a peer mentor, youth mentor, and juvenile probation officer. Skills I gained from being a case manager is motivational interviewing, teaching cognitive behavior therapy, anger management, and risk need assessements. Also, I gained skills within individual and group counseling in areas including self-esteem, problem solving, relationships, cognitive behavior issues, and other related issues. Career planning, social adjustment, personal management, social skills development, cognitive restructuring and development and problem solving skills for those that have been incarcerated. Key skills I gained as correctional counselors include decisiveness, security, effective communication skills, emotional stability, and basic knowledge of computers for entering data or writing incident reports. Being a peer mentor and a guest service representative elevated my experience in customer service, evaluations, time management, relevant expertise, enthusiasm for sharing expertise about DePaul, respectful attitude, eagerness to invest in others to resolve conflicts, the ability to give honest and direct feedback, and reflective listening and empathy skills. As a Youth Mentor I gained the experience of an agent of reconciliation and healing with different individuals in their communities. Having a positive impact on youth that have been involved with violence or trauma. Reaching out to victims, the wrongdoers, and different communities to create a safe space where healing can begin and where people can find the support and encouragement needed to begin reconciliation. Being an asset to youth that are seeking social change and a second chance at life. Developing peace circles, restorative justice methods, and activities for youth. As a Juvenile Probation Officer I honed skills to supervise youths who are on probation or parole. I work with adolescents and their families to assess and ensure compliance with court terms. Also, I provided counseling to the offender to deter behavioral issues. Obtaining my Bachelors Degree in Criminology has opened up many opportunities within the criminal justice field to pursue social change amongst the criminal justice system, psychological gun violence, drug and alcohol addiction, trauma and more. Obtaining my Masters Degree in Sociology will expand my horizon within my career aspirations to continue on a legacy of societal change within urban and marginalized communities across the United States.
