ABOUT COLINE PERRON
I am a doctoral candidate in contemporary history at the University of Strasbourg (France) and a doctoral Fellow at the Centre Marc Bloch (Berlin, Germany). My research interests are cultural diplomacy, Cold War history, global history of socialism, with a focus on the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Cuban revolution and Socialist Africa. My thesis, at the crossroads of cultural history, art history and the history of international relations, focuses on cultural exchanges between the GDR, Cuba, and African socialist countries (especially Ethiopia, Angola, Mozambique) between 1959 and 1990, particularly in the field of visual and graphic arts. I am interested in different types of artistic circulations between these countries (exhibition exchanges, artist trips, and student mobility), focusing on how the power dynamics between European socialist countries and countries in the Global South shaped cultural exchanges within the socialist camp.
