ABOUT COLIN HARTHCOCK
I am presently a scientist at LLNL researching optical damage precursors for dielectric thin films. At Lawrence Livermore we are trying to create the next generation of renewable energy, transitioning from our dependence on fossil fuels to nuclear fusion, incidentally an identical process to what happens in the Sun! Thats right, we are bringing the power of the Sun to a neighborhood near you! Anyway, that requires us to have the world\'s most energetic laser, but all that fluence brings with it problems - namely optical damage to mirrors and other optical devices. My job is to research the materials that these optical devices are made from to push the state-of-the-art forward to bring the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to new heights!I earned my PhD in chemical physics at Oregon State University. My research was focused on far-infrared cation spectroscopy (via the ZEKE spectroscopic method) of PAH and PANH molecules. We were interested in these molecules because they are excellent candidates for the constituents of the interstellar medium and possibly related to the precursors leading to the creation of life. My research also involved using Gaussian 03/09 to optimize geometries and calculate frequencies for the simulation of spectra.
