ABOUT KAREEMAH FOWLER
Kareemah Fowler, currently the Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance & CFO at the South Bend Community School Corporation, has been a public servant for the past two decades. She began her public sector journey in 2001 as a St. Joseph County Assessor, where she, among other things, analyzed and managed over $8 billion worth of property assessment data and successfully redesigned and consolidated 13 individual township assessor offices into two. By the time she was elected to the post of South Bend City Clerk in 2015 (after serving as Deputy Clerk for five years), she had had a great deal of experience streamlining processes and systems. She led efforts to increase government transparency with the public by making common council meetings viewable on YouTube and digitizing the minutes of these meetings across the entire history of South Bend, and she served a pivotal role in the city achieving recognition with the “Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award” for three years in a row. In 2019, she joined the SBCSC as Chief Financial Officer where her most visible achievement was the drafting, touring, and passing of the 2020 Referendum which allowed $220 million to be directed to the improving the educational reality of South Bend’s children. Finally, in early 2021, Kareemah was promoted to the post of Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance, where she continues to direct the efficient use of funds towards overcoming all of the challenges brought on and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as mitigating learning loss, updating building infrastructure for the post-COVID era, and tending to the mental-emotional state of our kids.
