ABOUT CHRISTINA RIGGS
I like to make complex things simple. I like simple words, I love a good checklist, and I loathe drama. And yet somehow I love the law, a system filled with complexities (and a bit of drama). Why? Because untangling legal complexities can be fun. Yes, fun. It’s also a bit of an art. But art takes time and time is valuable. So, now let’s talk about what I dislike. I dislike inefficiencies. During my fifteen years as a civil litigator, I noticed that attorneys spend a significant amount of time either (a) rediscovering knowledge from prior work (scouring DM systems thinking “I know I’ve looked at this before”); or (b) searching for unique knowledge within their firm (enter “Pardon the Interruption” emails). This can be frustrating, time-consuming, and ineffective. The attorney cannot recapture the time spent searching, and if the search is too complicated then the best enterprise knowledge may not surface. So, this is my new simplicity “challenge.” Enter knowledge management. Knowledge management has a lot of definitions circulating out there, so this is what I mean: finding the simplest way to get the right information to the right person at the right time. That’s my job. I listen, learn, and leverage. I listen to our people, who listen to our clients, and together we learn the pain points. We then leverage simple, yet innovative strategies to help gather, organize, and share the best enterprise knowledge to quickly address those pain points. It’s pretty fun. Yes, fun. I hope you find the fun in your job. Life is too short.
