ABOUT CHRISTIAN BETTS
I’m a design leader with over two decades of experience shaping UX teams, design strategy, and product vision. My career has been built on curiosity, experimentation, and continuous learning — from my early days in print design to building high-performing UX teams in complex, enterprise environments. My design philosophy blends Design Thinking with cognitive psychology. I believe technology should work with — not against — the human mind: supporting memory, language, and attention (experiential cognition) while enabling problem-solving, reasoning, and decision-making (reflective cognition). I aim to create experiences that genuinely improve people’s lives by aligning interfaces with how humans think, feel, and behave.I began in 1998 as a Junior Designer wielding Quark, Photoshop, and a lot of humility. I grew up in the transition from print to the early web: learning from legends like The Designers Republic (who were literally next door), David Carson and Vaughan Oliver, influenced by Hyper Island’s approach to New Media, and experimenting with Flash, Fireworks, and After Effects. Those years taught me motion, narrative, and craft.Over time, another question emerged: why do people behave the way they do? That shift pulled me into human-centred design, behavioural psychology, and the work of Don Norman, Jakob Nielsen, Jared Spool, and others who explore the deeper mechanics of interaction.Since 2013, I’ve led and scaled UX teams with a consistent goal: to create experiences that operate on all three levels of emotional design — visceral, behavioural, and reflective. I focus on aligning: • Visceral design: clear, coherent systems that match how we visually perceive • Behavioural design: usability patterns that reduce cognitive load and guide action • Reflective design: meaning, value, and the deeper story a product leaves behindDesign isn’t just beauty or utility — it’s the craft of making complex things feel intuitive, emotionally resonant, and unmistakably human.
