ABOUT CHRIS DANIELS

Emeritus Professor Christopher (Chris) Daniels BSc (Hons), PhD. DSc. FAICD is focused on conserving wildlife and connecting people with nature. He is currently Presiding member/Chair of the Green Adelaide Landscape Board. He is Emeritus Professor (awarded at UniSA) of Zoology at Adelaide University. Chris is a Governor of World Wildlife Fund, Board member of the RSPCA, SA Museum, State of the Environment Report, WOMAD Planet talks and several other organizations. Chris is Patron of the Junior Field Naturalists Club, and both Southern Ocean and Marine Discovery Centres. He is on the science committee of Nature Foundation SA, s having previously been vice president. He is also patron of the Friends of Woorabinda and served on many other nature-orientated committees, boards and societies, He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (2015).Other notable leadership positions include past Director of Cleland Wildlife Park SA, and the Koala Life Foundation. He was Prof. of Urban Ecology and Head of Dept at UniSA, Director of the Barbara Hardy Institute (UniSA), presiding member of the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges NRM (20••••18) and chair of Nature Play SA (20••••18). Chris has published 12 books/edited volumes and over 250 scientific and community publications including Our Country (2021) and Koalas (2022)(a children\'s book), Awards for Adelaide Nature of a City (2005) and Adelaide Water of a City (2010) include the overall Whitley Award (2006) the Planning Institute of Aust, Stormwater Industry and Institute of Landscape Architects. Other books include The Possum-tail Tree, The Fearsome Flute players, Creating Sustainable Communities and Guide to Urban Wildlife. In Oct 2018 Adelaide University awarded him a Doctor of Science (DSc) for his 30 years of research into \"The lives of animals and animals in our lives\". Chris has held fortnightly sessions on 891 ABC Radio since 2003 and has run many ABC “Citizen Science” initiatives. Chris gives talks, and other activities to societies, friends groups, schools etc. each year and lectures into programs offered by SA Universities.Chris won the South Australian Premiers Science award for communication (2007), gave the CONASTA Stanhope oration (2014) and was awarded the Natural History Medal from the Field Naturalists SA (2010). In 2021 Chris was ranked 2nd (behind Dr Barbara Hardy) in SA\'s 50 most influential Environmentalists (The Advertiser Aug 20th) Chris was a finalist for South Australian of the Year (2023). He received a UNESCO award for environmental research in 2023.
