ABOUT CHARLES BOHL

Dr. Charles Bohl is the Tony Goldman Director of Real Estate Development and Urbanism (MRED+U) and a tenured Full Professor at the University of Miami’s School of Architecture. Dr. Bohl is the founding Director of the MRED+U program, established in 2008.Dr. Bohl has dedicated his career to interdisciplinary education for emerging practitioners focused on planning, designing, and developing vibrant, walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods and communities. He is an expert on placemaking, mixed-use development, the public process for community planning, and interdisciplinary curriculum design. Research, programs, and initiatives led by Dr. Bohl have been supported by more than $11 million from major foundations and donors.He is the author of Place Making: Developing Town Centers, Main Streets and Urban Villages, a best-selling book published by the Urban Land Institute. He co-edited (w/ Jean-Francois Lejuene) the book Sitte, Hegemann, and The Metropolis (Routledge) and co-founded the Journal of Urbanism. He is the co-author/co-editor of The Art of the New Urbanism: Volume 11•••••10)(Wiley, 2025) and Volume 22•••••25)(Wiley 2026).Chuck has led design and implementation of interdisciplinary programs like the Knight Program in Community Building (KPCB), New Urbanism Online/CNU Accreditation, and the MRED+U program. His international work includes serving on steering committees for the Future of Places (FOP) Initiative with UN-Habitat, the Project for Public Spaces, the World Urban Campaign, and the ax:Son Johnson Foundation. He also served as the External Evaluator of the European School of Urbanism and Architecture (ESUA) for the European Union.Dr. Bohl serves on the Governance Committee of the 1300-member ULI Southeast Florida/Caribbean District Council, where he was previously Chair. He was Chair of the CNU Florida Chapter and is on the national CNU Board. Elected by faculty, he served three terms as Speaker of the School of Architecture Council. Before joining the University of Miami, he was a Senior Research Associate at UNC’s Center for Urban and Regional Studies, founding the Smart Growth and the New Economy Program and serving as Senior Fellow for the Weiss Urban Livability Program. Dr. Bohl earned a doctorate in city and regional planning from UNC at Chapel Hill. He lectures and consults widely on mixed-use development, place making and community building in the U.S. and abroad.Specialties: Placemaking, real estate, urban planning, urban design, town centers and mixed-use development.
