I am proud to celebrate my 25th anniversary as Executive Director of the Women\'s Law Project this month.Founded in 1974, the Women’s Law Project is one of the few public interest law centers in the nation devoted to women’s rights, and the only one in Pennsylvania. We work across a broad range of interconnected issues to create opportunities to change law and policy in ways that affect large numbers of people. My work is grounded in the belief that reproductive rights is fundamental to all women’s rights. As Executive Director the Women’s Law Project, I have presided over major legal victories in the areas of reproductive rights, discrimination in employment, education, athletics, and welfare. I am a leading expert in institutional response to sexual and domestic violence against women. I led a major reform effort to improve police handling of sex crimes in Philadelphia, and continue to oversee an annual audit of rape case files at the Philadelphia police department. In the wake of our local work, we successfully requested hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee to address the same miscarriages of justice occurring in cities across the country, and initiated the call to update the definition of rape used by the FBI in the Uniform Crime Reporting system. The Women’s Law Project is a founding member of the Pennsylvania Campaign for Women’s Health, a group of more than 40 local, state and national organizations strategically working together improve women’s health and economic security in Pennsylvania.
