In my current role as a Community Affairs Intern, I am spearheading a creative community centered project focused on preserving the history of Macon Bibb County’s public infrastructure including streets, buildings, parks, and more. I am exploring the stories behind their names, particularly those honoring people, and building an accessible digital database so residents can easily explore and learn this rich heritage.I am working with the Public Works and Parks and Beautification departments which maintain over 1,064 miles of paved roads, 39 miles of unpaved roads, and more than 75 passive parks and green spaces including more than 5 miles of paved walking trails. These facts underscore how deeply connected infrastructure is to our daily lives and how vital it is to understand the people behind the names.
