ABOUT CALLUM DOCHERTY

I am a US patent agent and a European and UK qualified patent attorney based in EIP’s US office in Denver, CO. My core focus is on drafting and prosecuting software, AI/machine learning, wireless communications, and physics-based inventions, as applied to a wide variety of sectors including autonomous vehicles, quantum computing, electronic devices, user interfaces, databases, bioinformatics, semiconductors and green technologies, especially wind turbines. I also have extensive experience with electronics and mechanical inventions. As both a European attorney and a US patent agent, I am experienced in preparing applications to meet the varying requirements of US and European practice, and advise clients on their worldwide IP strategy. I enjoy working closely with companies and inventors, getting to know their individual needs and aims, to better provide tailored IP advice. I work with large international companies and world-leading universities but also have experience with SMEs and the particular challenges they face, having run IP clinics for start-ups in both Oxford and Bristol. I was previously a regular contributor to the CIPA Journal, providing monthly reviews of the decisions of the UK IPO for the patent community. Before joining the patent profession I studied for a DPhil in Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Oxford. During the DPhil I carried out research into terahertz spectroscopy of two-dimensional materials, particularly graphene, as well as novel solar cell materials. I have published several papers in international peer reviewed journals, and presented talks at international conferences.
