RECENT AWARDS April 2019: Best of the West, News Writing, third place, with Todd J. Gillman for coverage of Beto O\'Rourke-Ted Cruz debate December 2017: Champions for Children Award, Texas Lawyers for Children, for reporting on “the dangers facing abused children and foster children in Texas.” August 2017: Nancy Monson Spirit of FOI Award, Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, for stories about breakdowns in Child Protective Services investigations in Dallas and Houston and ongoing crises in Texas’ foster care system. December 2016: Star reporter of the year, TexProtects (Texas Association for the Protection of Children), for stories about breakdowns in CPS investigations in Dallas and Houston and ongoing crises in Texas’ foster care system. April 2014: Third place, specialty reporting, Texas Associated Press Managing Editors 2013 awards, Class newspapers; for stories about horrific head-slamming deaths of foster children and gaps in Texas’ vetting of potential foster parents. November 2010: First place, beat reporting, large newspapers/wire services, Assn. of Capitol Reporters and Editors, for stories on how Texas restricts teens’ access to birth control, how its CPS fails to properly check the backgrounds of employees and how its flawed eligibility-determination system wrongly denied food stamps to tens of thousands of residents. March 2010: Member of reporting team that won 2010 Best in Business award, for projects by large publications, Society of American Business Editors and Writers. Our series “Cost of Care,” about perverse incentives driving up health care costs, included my stories about uninsured Texans and Scott & White Healthcare system\'s coordinated care.
