ABOUT BEN DEACON

A Principal Rail Telecommunications Engineer, with 28 years experience of communications systems. Employed as Telecoms CRE for the last 7 years, mentored CEM on 2 NRT Projects for 2 years and the last 3 years as a Telecoms Project Engineer for 6 projects for Network Rail Telecom (Now DDaT).Since 2012 have worked on the Railways as a Telecoms design engineer on many major projects including the award winning London Overground Capacity Improvement Program. Other major projects include the Great Western Electrification Programme, East Coast Mainline ETCS programme, Transpennine Route Upgrade, New Station designs at Robroyston, East Linton, Reston, Cottam Parkway and new platforms for Dunbar and Leeds stations. ATW as Contractors Responsible Engineer for Telecoms which has been proven on many varied projects such as Central Tunnels (Dawlish), Clapham Junction Station New Fire Escape, Transpennine Route Upgrade East and W4 sections, Wellington, Aviemore, Pitlochry, Nairn Station AFA Designs, East Midlands Corridor and Bescot Depot.Seconded into Network Rail Telecom as CRE and mentored CEM for 2 years to support critical Nokia NMS and XMC R8 Upgrades. Successfully upgraded over 200 XMC subracks across England and Wales.Currently seconded full time to DDaT as Telecoms Project Engineer to support PSTN Migration, Heritage Transmission Migration - Scotland, BT Kilostream and BT Megastream. 2025 saw BT Kilostream successfully completed with all circuits migrated.Experienced in Grip 2 - 5 design works, especially Cable Route Strategy, Cable Survey Reports, Feasibility studies, Option Selection Reports leading into Single option Design for Approval in Principle and Detailed Designs.Have worked on multitude of systems including station SISS, for example CCTV, PA, LLPA, PAVA, CIS. Also vast experience in Operational Telecoms, including FTN, FTNx, GSMR and ABB Keymile.Frequently called upon to provide Telecoms input to tenders for new work, including identifying risks, assumptions and exclusions.Always looking to improve my skills and willing to put in extra time to learn new things.
