Fire Captains are responsible for direct command over an assigned crew, and ensuring operational command and readiness for emergency calls at a moment\'s notice. Captains conduct the timely and efficient planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating of their assigned platoon\'s activities (emergency and non-emergency). Additional duties include: fire prevention; drill and instruction; apparatus and equipment maintenance; station, rig, and employee inspections; and training to ensure consistency. Provide overall supervision of emergency operations under his or her command, including emergency medical responses, incident responses, and all situations that pose a threat to public safety or property. This work involves a substantial element of danger which requires the responsible exercise of seasoned judgment in properly handling critical emergency situations. Captains work with considerable independence. Perform full Firefighter and EMT duties. Respond to fire alarms; make decisions as to the best methods of extinguishing fires; direct firefighting work until relieved of command by a superior officer. Instruct and drill firefighters in firefighting methods and techniques and related subjects. Prepare personnel records and fire reports regarding alarms, supplies, and other matters. May administer employee discipline. Captains may conduct or receive field performance reviews. Incident Management System according to National Incident Management System standards. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City staff, and the public. Relate to others in a courteous and respectful manner under stressful conditions. Maintain a work environment free of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Promote diversity and multi-cultural understanding in the workplace and the community.

Informal leadership, leading to training and expertise, followed by command service has been the best learning opportunity of my career and has guided my love for public service to look for ways to benefit and grow the team and persons I worked for. 32 years of public safety training, advancing opportunities, and the failure / success processes have provided a perspective for professional decision making and personal growth that favors taking a positivity oriented interest in staff, from executive administrators, laterally all the way over to the newest recruits (not beneath us). That interest is helpful when we care for all persons for their potential, strengths, and challenges. People need to know we will support them in success and failures, causing them to become better, even inspiring them to become great at their endeavors without allowing abusive experiences. The result we seek is Trust. People first, mission always, and integrity overhead should be guiding all public safety decisions. Difficult conversations and necessary choices are a privilege of serving as a leader, and the basis of success with both are respectful communication that demonstrates love for the mission, and deep appreciation for the variety of people on our teams. Events may soon signal the end of my professional service career, but will allow my personal faith and professional experience to transition into mentoring and teaching faith, and soft skills in a few pathways. Flying will resume as soon as practical and profitable. I’m always available for a heart to heart, a crisis call, moral support, recruiting and public service exam / interview coaching.
