ABOUT ASMAE OURKIYA

Dr. Asmae Ourkiya (pronounced Es-muh)(They/Them) is the founder of The Ecofeminist Institute, an organisation dedicated to providing education, training, consultancy, and research services to people and other organisations by providing holistic approaches towards addressing climate change and environmental challenges. Dr. Ourkiya obtained their Ph.D. degree from Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick after successfully defending their thesis titled “Queer Ecofeminism: From Binary Environmental Endeavours to Postgender Pursuits”, which has been published as a book by Rowman & Littlefield. Dr. Ourkiya is currently writing their second book, titled Queer Intersectional Ecofeminism: Theories, Practices, and Future Directions to be published by Springer Nature in late 2026. They have contributed to numerous books, EU environmental reports, and magazines, disseminating their research and expertise, which demonstrates their strong commitment to promoting social justice alongside environmental concerns. Their work is grounded in the belief that climate justice cannot be attained without addressing social justice, a concept that encompasses the interconnected objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals. As an important voice in the global conversation around sustainability, gender, and human rights, Asmae continues to bridge different schools of thought to promote lasting, positive change. Asmae has over 10 years of experience as a writer, speaker, researcher, editor, mentor, and consultant, and works towards bridging the gap between the humanities, climate politics, and climate sciences. Currently, Asmae is the Media and Engagement Manager at the European Geosciences Union in Munich, Germany. Their role is to manage the Union\'s press releases, coordinate press participation and the press centre at the EGU General Assembly, and write and manage the EGU blogs.
