The primary goal of an AR specialist is to maximize revenue recovery by diligently following up on unpaid or underpaid claims. Typical duties include:​Insurance Follow-Up: Contacting insurance companies (payers) to check on the status of outstanding claims and follow up on delayed or denied payments.​Denial Management and Appeals: Investigating why claims were denied (e.g, incorrect coding, lack of authorization, non-covered services) and preparing and submitting appeals to overturn the denial.​Claims Resolution: Working with internal teams (like coders or providers) to correct errors, resubmit clean claims, and resolve billing discrepancies.​Patient Balance Follow-up: Managing and resolving patient billing inquiries, including explaining charges, collecting outstanding patient balances, and sometimes setting up payment plans.​Payment Posting and Reconciliation: Ensuring that payments and adjustments received from payers and patients are accurately posted to the correct patient accounts.​Reporting: Reviewing and analyzing Accounts Receivable aging reports to identify trends, prioritize claims for follow-up, and report on the financial status to management.​Compliance: Ensuring all billing and collection activities adhere to healthcare regulations, including HIPAA.
