ABOUT ANDREA LISJAK

Dr. Andrea Lisjak is the numerical modelling lead and a co-founder of Geomechanica Inc.(Toronto, Canada), an engineering company that develops simulation software and provides simulation-aided, technical consulting and laboratory testing services. Andrea leads the development of new simulation capabilities for Geomechanica\'s finite-discrete element simulation software (Irazu) and carries out consulting in several fields of computational geomechanics. He specializes in the numerical simulation of damage development around surface and underground excavations, rock support, hydraulic fracturing, coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of discontinuous rock masses, and dynamic fracturing. Andrea has authored more than fifty technical papers, published his research findings in several top-tier international journals, and is an editorial board member of the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences. He has been the recipient of several national and international awards, including Osiride Brovedani Award (2008), Gustavo Sclocchi Award (SPE and EAGE, 2014), Manuel Rocha Medal (ISRM, 2015), Future Leader (ARMA, 2016), Scott Sloan Best Paper Award (Elsevier, 2020 and 2023), Best Paper Award (ARMA, 2023), and Applied Research Award (ARMA, 2024). Andrea holds BSc and MSc degrees (2006 and 2008) in civil engineering from the University of Trieste, Italy, and a PhD degree (2013) in rock mechanics from the University of Toronto, Canada.
