ABOUT ALICE LAM
I am passionate about community building through volunteerism. I love empowering individuals to give back and to start projects that make our cities strong, resilient and inclusive. In my day job I build neighbourhoods and strong relationships developing commercial properties in Calgary. I volunteer by sitting on multiple boards including the KOAC Sculpture Park and Nature Reserve (located just outside of Calgary this is the largest sculpture park in western canada!), Creative Aging Calgary Society (we help promote vibrant and positive aging among seniors living in isolation), I LOVE YYC CHINATOWN (I host historic walking tours to educate Calgarians on how Chinese pioneers developed the 3rd and longest lasting Chinatown in Calgary), The Calgary Foundation (where I sit on the Health and Wellness Grants Committee learning about innovative ways the non profit sector is helping increase the welfare and health of vulnerable Calgarians), I am an advisory council member for OMNI TV (Roger\'s nonprofit arm of multi-lingual broadcasting), former Board Member for the Crescent Heights Business Improvement Area (we promote and plan how to turn Crescent Heights into the next destination shopping, food, and retail area for the Crescent Heights Businesses), Committee Member for Tomorrow\'s Chinatown (a City of Calgary committee aimed at providing insight as the community completes the Chinatown Cultural Plan and ARP), and most recently I completed 6 years as a board member for the Calgary Immigrant Womens Association (the largest female serving settlement agency for refugee and immigrant women in the world!). I am the co-founder of the Calgary Community Fridge. In August 2020, in 3 days we raised 15k to create an outdoor barrier free 24/7 access Fridge, Freezer and Pantry. We have helped establish fridges in Kelowna, Vancouver, Edmonton and Regina. In July 2021 we opened Calgary\'s first \"Pay what you can\" Thrift store. It is volunteer run and all proceeds goes to our bills and then for buying food for the community. I help run a co-op retail store called the Tigerstedt Flea Market located in Crescent Heights. We support BIPOC, Youth and Senior vendors who normally wouldn\'t have a retail presence. I am the founder of vollyapp.com a free to use website built by volunteer software developers to connect Calgarians to volunteer opportunities. To date we have helped over Calgarians connect to their communities through volunteering.
