ABOUT AHRIA ONTAY-LAJON ILYAS
I am a J.D. Candidate with a concentration in Public Interest Law, driven by a deep commitment to social justice and equity. My academic and professional journey sits at the intersection of law, education, and community advocacy, where I work to dismantle structural barriers and expand access to opportunity for historically marginalized populations. I have mentored and advocated alongside hundreds of Boston youth, championing their leadership and affirming their lived experiences as sources of power. In my role as Special Projects Manager with Boston Public Schools & the Boston Student Advisory Council, I support/coordinate district-wide initiatives that center student voice, bridge equity gaps, and advance culturally responsive practices in educational systems. I collaborate across departments to embed anti-racist principles into policies and programming that shape the educational experience for thousands of students. Currently, I serve as a Legal Intern with Public Counsel’s Opportunity Under Law Project, where I support impact litigation that challenges racial and economic injustice in public education and youth incarceration. My work includes drafting legal memoranda on constitutional claims, conducting fact investigation, and contributing to discovery and motion practice. I draw from my community-rooted background to offer culturally grounded insight into equitable legal remedies and systemic reform. I believe that legal advocacy, when informed by those most impacted, becomes a powerful tool for collective liberation.
