The Dean Close Foundation is a group of six schools and nine Day Nurseries across Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and South Wales. Originally a co-educational boarding and day school which provides continuity of education from age 2+ to 18. The original Dean Close School was established in 1886, and is set in 50 acres of parkland in the centre of Cheltenham. The School is renowned for focusing on individual development. Small classes, excellent learning facilities including a brand new 350-seater Theatre in the Prep School, plus a further 550-seater professional theatre in the Senior School, amphitheatre, floodlit astro-turfs, 25m indoor pool, climbing wall, indoor rifle range, dance studio and fully equipped gymnasium all help to nurture each child’s strengths and talents. With around 140 pupils in the Pre-Prep school, 320 pupils in the prep school and 500+ in the senior school, Dean Close is small enough to allow everyone to know one another and to feel valued. It also allows everyone to get fully involved in the life of the School. However, it is large enough to have an extremely strong boarding community, vibrant and exciting creative arts, impressive academic results and great sports results across all ages.In 2015 the DCF embarked on a growth and income diversification strategy. In 2015 the Pre-Prep and Prep Schools at St Johns on the Hill, Chepstow and DCNL was created. 3 separate Nurseries in Chepstow, St Arvans, and Newport were added to DCNL by acquisition. In 2017 two more nurseries were added, one in Cheltenham and one in Gloucester. In 2021 Airthrie school in Cheltenham was acquired. In 2021 a sixth nursery was opened in Cheltenham. In 2025 3 new nurseries were opened or acquired in Tewkesbury and Stroud. Kingham Hill school joined the DCF in July 2025. This is a senior school of 300 pupils set in the beautiful Cotswolds.
