ABOUT ZOE HAYES

My name is Zoe and I am a graduate of UC Berkeley with a double major in philosophy and legal studies. I work to serve the needs of low income individuals through ensuring access to legal aid and representation. As a queer person from a rural area, I have personal experience of the egregious lack of access to justice felt by low-income members of the LGBTQ+ community. There is work that needs to be done at all levels of our government. My dream is to found my own nonprofit to advocate for and provide access to legal services, mental health services, and education to low-income LGBTQ+ individuals in rural areas in California. I graduated with a bachelors of arts in philosophy and legal studies in the Spring of 2022. Throughout my time at Berkeley, I did all I can to immerse myself in policymaking, the law, and the nonprofit sector. Through my internship at CRLA, my current work-study job at Legal Aid Association of California, and my position at the Berkeley Student Cooperative, I have learned and practiced grant research and writing, project management, communications, and training. Every skill that I have learned I have put to use as founder, Editor-In-Chief, and President of the Pre-Law Review at Berkeley. As President, I have worked to provide a space for UC Berkeley students and students across the world to challenge themselves by writing beautiful pieces in various topics of the law. We have sought to make our organization accessible to all undergraduate students and provide ample opportunities for development such as website creation, event planning, legal research, and communications. Through my time as a board member at MoPRIDE, Inc, the only LGBTQ+ nonprofit with a physical space in the Modesto area, my time as Speaker of the Inter-Club Council at Modesto Junior College, and my time as current Assistant Chair of Judicial Council at the Associated Students of the University of California, I have found passion in nonprofit governance. I know that\'s strange to say, but I truly believe that an organization needs a solid structure of governance to keep itself accountable to its mission and vision.I have policy making and implementation experience, and I want to learn all that I can about the law.
