Dr. Zia Bukhari is focused on defining and mitigating health impacts associated with physicochemical, microbial and pharmaceutical exposure through environmental routes especially drinking water, wastewater and reclaimed water. He has over 20 years of research and industry experience. Current research areas include:1. Development and employment of advanced methodologies to facilitate human pathogens isolation, identification, characterization and infectivity determination2. Determination of disinfection studies for drinking water, wastewater and reclaimed water systems; including feasibility studies for full scale application of UV technology 3. Development of rapid methods for detecting emerging contaminants (i.e. protozoan parasites, E. coli O157:H7, Legionella, pharmaceuticals etc) 4. Drinking water distribution system protection through deployment of Early Warning Systems (EWS), technical (i.e. contaminant dissemination, attenuation, characterization etc), management (i.e. planning, coordination, communication) and enhanced responsiveness strategies5. Operational & human health significance of nitrosamines in drinking water and Legionella in reclaimed water/drinking water and development of management strategies6. Determination of reliability and safety of alternative water sources (i.e. direct potable reuse and sea water desalination)7. Inactivation mechanisms involved in chemical disinfection of Opportunistic PathogensDr. Bukhari has led numerous national and international research studies. He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and is a recipient of several awards including:2006: Outstanding achievement in research and education.
