ABOUT ZARIN SULTANA

I’m an innovative educator with a strong science and technology background who reaches the alienated and unmotivated. As a leader and mentor, I’ve improved instruction in the face of strict guidelines. I succeeded in overcoming racial and cultural barriers to establish trusting relationships with students, parents, and staff. I’m a quick learner who grasps and communicates clearly about complex material. People appreciate my contributions to high morale by getting to know everyone and having a positive attitude. Magna Cum Laude at John Hopkins University.When I first became a teacher, I was assigned to an underperforming mostly-minority school where the students had never seen someone who looks like me. I learned all their names and correct pronunciation and learned about them: their backgrounds and interests. I incorporated authors and stories from their respective cultures, as well as social media. Students became engaged in my lessons and gave me a 97% positive rating. They also came to me with problems and trusted me to help them.As a lab assistant in the Laboratory for Evolutionary Endocrinology, I became interested in women’s health and the impacts of stress on their health. As part of a study to determine the impact of workplace stress, I met with women from a Polish American background to determine how their stressors impacted their biology. I collected samples, surveyed them about stressors, gave them a Fitbit to determine their activity levels. It made me realize that we need to normalize conversations about women’s health in our everyday lives.Pedagogy: Culturally Responsive Teaching, Data-Driven Instruction, Responsive Classroom, Inquiry-based Instruction, Restorative Justice Practices, Universal Design for Learning, and Social-Emotional Learning.
