ABOUT ZANDIE BROCKETT 张桂才

As a public programming curator, my work builds space and place for site-specific happenings, immersive performance, and interactive conversations that explore the intersection of live art, experimental music, technology, and philosophy. My research has focused on processes of socio-cultural change between China and the US with a focus on socially engaged artistic practices, trans-Pacific visual narratives and oral histories that \'reOrient\' notions of the \'East\', and the medium of convening. My approach has found me helping the world\'s most influential brands and organizations - NeueHouse, Louis Vuitton, Apple Beats, Swire, Annenberg Space for Photography, Rhizome, A24, Amazon Music, and Champion - reimagine audience engagement through unique partnerships and programmatic experiences. Recently, I reimagined programming as a form of exhibition making as the Director of Community and Culture at NeueHouse, curating programmatic series including: Future Technê (2023), a multi-part Salon series in collaboration with the Berggruen Institute that asks how experimental modes of embodiment, more-than-human intelligence, and narrative world-building can create new ecologies for a sustained future; Caring Futures (2022), a conversation series that centered the practices of radical joy, kinship and mutual aid found in the Trans-community, and a commissioned public mural, Todes Juntes (2022), by Marcel Pardo Ariza; Sunshine and Noir (2022), an artist film series that explored the ecologies of Los Angeles from oil to waterways to concrete; and NeueJazz, a residency for experimental jazz in LA. While living in Beijing and Shanghai, I founded the curatorial lab, Bactagon Projects, published and edited the bilingual literary exhibition, Bajia, was a founding member of the indie publishing working group Distribution Assembly East, was the Associate Curator on the Shanghai Project biennale under Hans Ulrich Obrist and Yongwoo Lee, managed international projects for painter Liu Xiaodong, and catalogued archives for Vitamin Creative Space. I\'ve written extensively on contemporary Chinese art and have published translations / writings in LEAP, AsiaArtPacific, ArtForum China, Art World, Architectural Digest China and Condé Nast Traveler. I received grants from the Getty Marrow Initiative, the European Alternative Transnational Dialogue Caravan, and the Uruguay Ministry of Culture and Education for Teetering on the Edge of the World (2015), the first exhibition of video, experimental music, photography, and printed matter from China in Uruguay.
