About Zaineb Alattar
I am a scientist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where I work on developing and evaluating U.S. drinking water policies and risk communication messaging to ensure Americans have access to safe drinking water. With over 10 years of experience conducting public health and social science research, and over 8 years developing and evaluating public health programs and policies, I am committed to promoting public health and empowering individuals with the resources they need to make informed decisions about their health.Prior to moving to Washington DC, I received my Master of Public Health in health behavior and health education from the University of Michigan, specializing in health communication. There, I conducted research analyzing mental health of refugees in the U.S. and models for enhancing mental health care capacity for refugees on a global scale. Through research, I also explored a variety of other public health issues, including financial barriers to chronic disease management as well as developing and evaluating multilingual, multimedia public health interventions aimed at enhancing patient-provider communication, health care literacy and health insurance access in low-income and immigrant communities around Metro Detroit. I am passionate about reducing health disparities, working with historically marginalized communities, and enhancing the public health systems that serve them. In order to develop informed and sustainable solutions, I believe that impacted communities should have an active voice in the process. I approach health issues holistically through a social determinants of health perspective, to understand the social, political, economic, and environmental factors that impact health, and develop evidence-based, multidimensional policies and programs.
