ABOUT ZAHIDUL ISLAM

I am a Senior Manager at River Engineering and Technical Services section, Watershed Resilience and Predictions branch, Department of Environment and Protected Areas, Government of Alberta. I lead a team of professional engineers and geoscientists responsible for contributing to provincial flood response and recovery efforts, providing river engineering expertise to internal and external clients, and leading provincial flood and fluvial hazard identification initiatives. In my previous role (20••••24), I worked as a Fluvial Hydraulics and Geomorphology Specialist where I led the development of Alluvial Fan Flooding Hazard Identification, including the education and awareness program. I worked as a Hydrologist and Water Policy Specialist during 20••••21 where my principle role was to ensure that advice, policy, regulations and management outcomes are supported by scientific and technical principles of natural resource management. I hold a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Water Resources Engineering (WRE) from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and a Ph.D. in WRE from University of Alberta. Before joining the Alberta Government I worked about four years as a lecturer at the WRE Department, BUET, and about five years as a graduate research and teaching assistant at the University of Alberta. I had also worked as a research fellow at the Deltares, The Netherlands. I have published numerous scientific articles (journals, book chapters, conference papers, technical reports, thesis) on hydrology, hydraulics, water resources management, and climate change related issues.I am also involved in writing blogs and articles, and has published Op-Ed articles on water resources and environmental issues on newspapers and online news media. I am currently the Chair of Hydrotechnical Division Council of Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSSE). I am also working as a Practice Review Board Member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). My voluntary role as a member of the Practice Review Board will help to ensures that APEGA\'s procedures in the areas of registration, discipline, maintenance of competence, and enforcement are adequate to protect the public interest.
