Keystrokes, window dialogue events in PCs, run speed of equipment, changeover time for an injection mold, GPM of chemicals, delays and wait times for customers, starts and stops of a machine, inventory days, color and type of rubber worms selling in a marina. Looseness, lubrication, contamination. So many funny stories: how many variations of white do you have? Oral tradition does not work. It never has. If we can measure it, we can improve it. We typically measure time. Financial based metrics follow time-based metrics. Rarely do I find complex processes. Most often ‘interrupters’ can be solved with SIPOC and daily management. Define the owner, process (work) steps, and then ensure the inputs are ready before they are needed. Use visual signals, indicators & controls. Define a numerical operational definition and audit. Presto.The scientific method plan, do, check, adjust. String, cardboard, tape. Model, model, model. Always with teams. Always with data. Always failing fast. This allows us to find value add transforming steps. Models of hospital patient flow. Models of software screens. Models of fixturing & tooling. Models of EDI column headings. Models of manufacturing cells. Models of email in/out of work teams.Typically, clients ask us to build Lean management systems.
