ABOUT ZACHARY MCCLEAN

I am a sport scientist and strength and conditioning practitioner with a focus on applying data-driven and machine learning approaches to elite sport environments to enhance athletic performance, reduce injury risk, and improve rehabilitation and return-to-sport outcomes.I currently work as a Player Development Sport Performance Coach with the Calgary Flames (NHL), where I use an integrated athlete monitoring framework to individualize training and performance strategies across multiple stages of athlete development. In parallel, I am a PhD candidate in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, working within the Integrated Neuromuscular Sport Performance Laboratory. My research is conducted in close collaboration with the University of Calgary Dinos Athletics program and the Sport Medicine Centre, where I develop and apply novel biomechanical, neuromuscular, and machine learning methods to inform ACL rehabilitation, return-to-performance decision making, and athlete readiness to return to sport. My work sits at the intersection of sport science, strength and conditioning, and applied data analytics, with the goal of translating complex data into actionable insights for coaches, clinicians, and performance staff in high-performance sport settings. I am motivated by bridging the gap between advanced analytics and day-to-day practice, ensuring that complex performance data meaningfully informs decisions in professional sport environments.
