ABOUT ZABDIEL ALVARADO-MARTINEZ
As a researcher, I am drawn to finding answers to difficult questions and understanding the fundamental mechanisms that operate in nature. During my time as a graduate student, I have been able to work on the skills that have made me a competent researcher, but have also had the opportunity to develop as a leader and mentor. Studying the antimicrobial effects that plant-derived phenolic acids have against common food-borne pathogens like Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying their inhibitory action and the resulting cellular changes that take place has allowed me to learn and apply skills related to microbiology, molecular and cell biology, microscopy, bacterial genetics and microbiome analysis. In addition to extensive lab experience through bench work, I have had extensive first-hand experience with animal trial work, environmental sample collection and sample processing; in addition to three years of teaching a microbiology lab, manuscript writing, editing and publishing (book chapters and research articles), training undergraduate volunteers, and performing general lab administration duties. I look towards a future in which I can use all of these skills together to develop projects with colleagues that can work together to create something new and long-lasting.
