ABOUT YURIY SMOLIN
Currently a staff process technical instructor at Lam Corporation. Previously was a supply chain engineer and a process design engineer at Intel Corporation.During my Ph.D, I developed a benign single-step solvent-free CVD process for the conformal and uniform synthesis and deposition of polymer thin films (from 10nm to hundreds of microns) into porous nanomaterials. I investigated how CVD processing conditions (diffusion limited & reaction limited regimes) impacted polymer properties, experimentally and theoretically studied the structure-property-performance behavior of these polymers, and optimized the performance (2x improvement) of polymer integrated nanomaterial-based energy storage and conversion devices. Furthermore, I developed first-principles mathematical models which, in synergy with experiments, revealed 3 unique ways polymer chemistry impacts interfacial electrochemical processes. This led to the optimized intelligent selection of polymers and optimized device design and performance. Collaborated with W. L. Gore on developing novel hydrophobic/hydrophilic polymers, and understanding how tuning polymer chemistry and structure improves water and oil repellent coatings for textiles/membranes.I have done R&D with a diverse group of people in academia and in industry. I have been the recipient of 21 fellowships/awards for my research contributions. I am a skilled public speaker with 14 oral conference presentations, a professional writer with 13 peer reviewed research papers.
