About Arthur Yuan
Territorial aspect of national IP laws demands strategic international protection decisions for IP right holders. It is no longer a decision of \"to file or not to file,\" but a decision of how one maximizes protections based on the national IP laws. Also, IP issues are a part of every business decision now when it comes to innovation so that due diligence in M&A deals requires IP perspectives. I have been wearing a number of different hats since 2004: 1. Practicing law—advising clients on software or computer related technologies, ranging from operating systems in computers to mobile devices to complex artificial intelligence and machine learning applications. In addition, I also counsel clients on international scope and strategy of their inventions, and work closely with outside counsels and in-house counsels to find the appropriate path. 2 Teaching law—teaching and mentoring law students; designing course curriculum; pro bono patent counseling of individual inventors; interfacing IP judges, patent examiners, and attorneys to working with inventors. These different roles enable me to build meaningful relationship and a deeper appreciation of changes in these legal landscapes while having a range of different but insightful perspectives. These backgrounds also enable me to be creative when it comes to encouraging engineers to think about patents and innovative ideas. I very much enjoy the legal work I do and hope to continue this path for years to come.
