ABOUT YJ MONTALBO
YJ specializes in developing mission-driven praxis (theory-informed professional practice) among his students. As a former international student from the Philippines and a proud person of colour, he is committed to decolonization, equity and inclusion. Aside from teaching, he also works as an Associate Director of Student Life, giving him a unique perspective about inside and outside the classroom learning and the student experience. In this role, he contextualizes student services and community life programming based on the real needs of racialized international students, while fostering an intercultural community of learners. He holds an honours Master of Education in Adult Education with his graduate research (titled,\"Pagbabalik Tanaw Gamit ng Obra: An Arts-Based Reflexive Narrative Inquiry Research on a Filipino International Student Experience in Alberta, Canada.\") focusing on the internationalization of education in Canada. He is currently pursuing Doctor of Education in the Field of Social Justice, Diversity, and Social Justice at the University of Western Ontario. His students describe his class as \"inspiring.\" He invites students to practice critical and reflexive thinking through dialogue and art-based learning. He fosters difficult conversations about social justice through weaving different traditionally marginalized voices in the classroom while grounding the lessons in practical application in professional settings. He often asks,\"knowing this, how do you be a better human being at your current role?\"
