Apply welding/joining expertise in Design for Manufacturing, Design for Reliability, and Design for Serviceability. • Develop Rivian Quality Standards for welding processes, including Laser Beam Welding, Resistance Spot Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Friction Stir Welding, Brazing, Ultrasonic Welding etc, covering Body-in-White, Chassis, Battery Module/Pack, Drive Unit & Invertor, and Collision Repairs. • Qualify raw materials and suppliers in all welding related matters, support Supplier Development and Qualification through cross-functional efforts. • Select and qualify welding/joining equipment, validate welding processes, and perform weld quality and reliability tests to facilitate decision making in Production Line Design, Vendor Qualification and Selection, and Production Quality Control. • Act as a primary technical point of contact for diagnosing and containing emergent manufacturing and in-service weld quality concerns. • Manage a state-of-the-art welding lab and coordinate with Failure Analysis, Materials Testing and Materials Engineering teams to provide fast turnaround for welding validation requests from internal stakeholders. • Generate first-hand welding/joining data to enable data-informed decisions for Design, Manufacturing, Safety, Reliability and Durability. • Establish internal welding/joining data management system and create a sophisticated data library to correlate ‘Materials – Processes – Properties – Performance’ in the full life cycle of the vehicle. • Lead welding and joining R&D for improving current vehicle production and supporting future vehicle development. • Provide and coordinate welding related training for design, supplier development, quality, manufacturing and service teams.
