ABOUT YARISA TEJADA
I’m a junior public health student at Temple University on the pre-med track, driven by a strong interest in both patient care and the bigger systems that shape health outcomes. Healthcare has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was exposed to medicine through my mom, who is a physician in the Dominican Republic and teaches phlebotomy and EKG in the U.S. That early exposure showed me not just what it means to treat patients, but how different healthcare systems can impact the way people receive care. As a Patient Care Technician, I’ve worked directly with patients and seen how important it is for people to feel heard, respected, and cared for. At the same time, my work as an Active Surveillance Administrative Assistant on a CDC-funded project has allowed me to explore the research side of public health, where I’ve contributed to data collection and outreach focused on post-COVID conditions in diverse communities. One area I care deeply about is improving access for underserved communities. Being bilingual has allowed me to help bridge communication gaps and support more inclusive participation in research and care. I’m interested in working with underserved communities and finding ways to connect hands-on patient care with larger improvements in healthcare systems.
