About Yakirah Mitchel
I’m a Paralegal with experience across nonprofits, local government, political campaigns, private immigration firms, and extensive work in legal research and writing.I graduated in May 2024 from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Sociology (Law, Justice, and Social Change) and a minor in Latin American & Caribbean Studies with a focus on Human Rights. I completed my degree with Honors and advanced proficiency in Spanish across speaking, reading, writing, and listening. In my previous role at the Law Firm of Moumita Rahman, I supported clients navigating complex humanitarian and removal defense cases. My work included preparing T and U visa applications, drafting motions to reopen, terminate, and continue proceedings, and guiding clients through their rights and options within the immigration system. This hands-on experience strengthened my legal writing, case strategy, and client-centered advocacy skills.Currently, I’m doing contract and freelance paralegal work, and I’m always open to new short-term or project-based opportunities.Previously, I served as a Research Assistant to Dr. Erin McAuliffe at the University of Michigan, contributing to her dissertation on the intersection of immigration and the child welfare system. Our co-authored paper, “Offering protection to immigrant youths in America: Is asylum or Special Immigrant Juvenile Status truly in the best interest of the child?” was published in the International Social Science Journal in August 2024.I also bring experience from my time as an Attorney Brief Writer for I-601, I-601A, and I-212 waivers at Palmer Rey Immigration Attorneys, alongside my AmeriCorps service in educational and community outreach with the Community Action Network. In addition, I have several years of experience in local and state political campaigns, including serving as Deputy Campaign Manager for Krystle DuPree’s successful campaign for Ann Arbor Board of Education. My professional interests lie at the intersection of immigration, public policy, social welfare, and education. I would greatly appreciate any connections, insight, or opportunities in the areas of law, education, and policy.Let’s connect!
