Research Affiliate in Transformation Lab
Jan 2019 — Present
The Transformation Lab (http://transformationlab.link/) is a design research group that studies how design thinking and methods can be applied to change human behaviors, experiences, and lifestyles with interests in business, health, and sustainability. The lab is part of The Design School in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Yumeng collaborated with researchers from Design, Engineering, Education, Astrophysics, Art, and Sustainability to conduct research that includes:• Conducted case study research on integrating strategic design and service design into graduate design education collaborating with local company-PipelineAZ. Collecting and analyzing students’ weekly-video learning diaries, research plans, sketches, presentations, reports, and prototype artifacts through qualitative research methods includes observation, semi-structured interviews, and content analysis for a detailed understanding of students’ insights.• Implemented Participatory Design with Mo’ili’ili community in Honolulu and the design students from ASU to redesign Old Stadium Park through recruiting participants, organizing a community engagement workshop (50+ people); and pop-up design conversations (100+ people); and published at Participatory Design Conference (PDC2020), Manizales, Colombia.• Utilized mixed-research methods (Python, MAXQDA) analyzed 638 job postings across design practices in the U.S. job market and identified important co-design skills that employers expect from designers. This research will be presented and published at the International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR2021), Hong Kong, China.• Analyzed sustainable design practices by organizing workshops, recruiting and interviewing participants, and data analysis, and published at the Design Research Society Conference (DRS2020), Brisbane, Australia.
