About Xiaohang Zhang
At the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Quantum Sensor Group, I developed techniques to manipulate the thermal conductance of SiN membranes at sub-kelvin temperatures and proposed a theory to describe their behavior. I demonstrated a macroscopic sub-kelvin refrigerator using superconducting tunnel junctions with over tenfold improvement from previous efforts, cooling a 25 g copper stage using micrometer-scale junctions. I fabricated one of NIST’s most complex devices—a 20-layer transition-edge sensor integrated with a superconducting tunnel junction refrigerator. I managed all aspects of device fabrication, tool maintenance, and am experienced in full-stack nanofabrication processes. I also have expertise in cryogenic systems, device operations, and handling of cryogenic liquids. Additionally, I earned a master’s degree in computer science, specializing in data science and machine learning. At Alibaba Quantum Lab, I led the development of full-process fabrication recipes for superconducting qubits with various materials. This work resulted in long coherence times and a record two-qubit fidelity of 99.7%. I also developed an air-bridge process with world-record yield and performance. I played a key role in establishing a new nanofabrication facility, overseeing tool selection and procurement for systems such as KrF ASML steppers, TEL coaters/developers, single-wafer cleaners, flip-chip bonders, SEM, mask aligners, wet benches, and annealing tools. I participated in cleanroom design, vendor negotiations, and facility build-out from start to finish. At Zhejiang Laboratory, I serve as PI of the Phased Field Telescope Group and hold adjunct positions at Zhejiang University, the National Astronomical Observatories (CAS), and ShanghaiTech University. We developed China’s first high-sensitivity kinetic inductance detector (KID) array with ten thousand infrared pixels, achieving international-leading performance and breaking technological barriers. The detector supports applications in astronomy, aerospace, security, medicine, meteorology, and defense. We are currently developing the Phased Field Telescope—a novel radio-frequency computational imaging system to meet emerging demands in dynamic cosmic observation, enabling wide field-of-view, high time-frequency resolution, and fast imaging capabilities.
