About Xavier Hines Coombs
Systems engineer and robotics engineer working at the intersection of neuroprosthetics, brain–computer interfaces, and human–machine integration.I currently work as a Systems Engineer at General Dynamics Electric Boat, where I support complex engineering programs through product lifecycle management, technical documentation, and procurement specifications for mechanical and electrical systems. My work involves coordinating across multidisciplinary engineering teams to translate system requirements into reliable and deployable solutions.I earned a B.S. in Robotics Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and an M.S. in Management with a concentration in Operations and Supply Chain. This interdisciplinary background allows me to approach engineering challenges through both a technical and systems-level perspective.Alongside my professional work, I pursue independent research in neural prosthetics and brain–computer interfaces. My current work explores the development of modular neuromusculoskeletal models that simulate the interaction between neural signals, muscles, and prosthetic systems, with the goal of enabling more natural and intuitive prosthetic control. My long-term research interest centers on the development of neural interfaces and prosthetic technologies capable of restoring movement and function for individuals with limb loss or neurological injury. I am preparing to pursue doctoral research in neuroengineering or biomedical engineering to further contribute to this field.I am particularly interested in how neural interfaces and prosthetic technologies can restore not only movement, but also a sense of agency and embodiment for individuals interacting with assistive technologies. I am also interested in the ethical and societal implications of neural interfaces and human–machine integration as neurotechnology becomes increasingly capable of directly interfacing with the human nervous system.Examples of my ongoing research and neuromusculoskeletal modeling work can be found at:xavierhinescoombs.com Research interests: neuroprosthetics, brain–computer interfaces (BCI), neural signal decoding, neuromusculoskeletal modeling, human–machine interaction, and neurotechnology ethics.
