About Winifred Haun
Winifred Haun is an award winning choreographer and dance instructor, currently living and working in Chicago and Oak Park, IL. She is the founder of her own dance company, Winifred Haun & Dancers. Ms. Haun is a 2016 recipient of a MacArthur Foundation International Connections award. She began her formal dance training at the age of 10 at the Ellis-DuBoulay School of Ballet in Chicago. Attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale from 1981 to 1984, graduating with a B.A. in Theatre/Dance. Choreographed several works for student and faculty dance concerts and musicals. Served as dance captain and assistant director while performing in several summer stock theatre productions in southern Illinois. Member of the Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theatre (JHCDT) from 1985 to 1991. Performed and taught with JHCDT while on tour in the US, Canada, Mexico and the middle east. Appointed JHCDT Company Scholarship Coordinator in 1988. Formed the scholarship group into a separate company, the Pilsen Dance Ensemble. Won a Ruth Page Award nomination for Dancer of the Year. Choreography has been presented and commissioned by Chicago Ballet, Aerial Dance Chicago (AMEBA), Zephyr Dance, MOMENTA, and the Chicago Repertory Dance Ensemble and many others. Nominated three times for the prestigious Ruth Page Award for Choreography. Dances have appeared at many midwest and national venues. Received many grants for choreography from the City of Chicago, Illinois Arts Council and several midwest foundations. Founded and produced Chicago’s Next Dance Festival from 1994 to 2001. Taught modern dance and dance composition at the Beijing Dance Academy in China, Chicago Academy for the Arts, Columbia College, University of Nevada, Illinois Wesleyan University and at numerous festivals and workshops worldwide. Currently teaches modern dance at Hubbard St. Dance Chicago and Deeply Rooted Productions.
